What to Expect As an Adult With Braces

October 20, 2022

Adults are increasingly considering braces to correct teeth alignment difficulties. Now that knowledge is more accessible and there have been more technological advancements, more folks are learning about the many methods for straightening crooked teeth. Braces aren't just for teens – adults can get them, too!

Braces aren't just for straightening teeth, either. They also correct related irregularities that can cause serious dental issues at a later stage. Correcting gaps and bites lead to better oral health. If you're thinking of getting braces as an adult, here are a few things to expect.

Timeline for Treatment

Depending on the severity of your condition, the treatment time may take longer than it would as a teenager. This is because a teenager's teeth aren't as firmly rooted as an adult's teeth. Treatment time can take between 18 months and three years, according to WebMD.

Initial Days

When your braces are first fitted, you'll feel slight discomfort for a few days. Eating soft foods will help as you get used to having braces. Brush after each meal and avoid certain hard foods that might damage the braces. Adults usually maintain their oral hygiene significantly better than teens, so adjusting to this new normal should be relatively easy.

Affordability

According to U.S. News, adult braces typically cost around $6,000. As an adult, you now have disposable income to afford the treatment, but there are also payment plans available if you need one. Insurance can cover medically necessary orthodontic care but not for braces that address cosmetic interests. Find out more details from your insurance company.

Retainers

Once your braces are removed, you'll need to wear retainers. Retainers keep the teeth in their new, corrected position. Initially, you'll wear the retainers all the time. Eventually, this will change to wearing them only at night. Your orthodontist will advise and guide you on this step.

Confidence

Getting your teeth straightened will boost your confidence levels, especially if you've held off on getting braces until adulthood. You'll walk into meetings confidently, be able to carry on conversations with new people, and smile more often, thus possibly improving your whole lifestyle.

There are various types of braces available, and your orthodontist will advise you on the best ones for you based on the condition of your teeth and your budget. When you get your braces, maintaining your oral hygiene and going for your scheduled checks are key to getting beautiful teeth and a lovely smile. Contact Boland Orthodontics to learn more today!
